Any advice for how to handle tipping on tours?

In the UK tipping is not the norm, and I always feel unsure about how, when and how much to tip when I travel, especially on a tour!

When I trekked the Inca trail a few years back, there was a big drama over tipping as the guide told us they get the highest level of tips, then the porters, then the cooks - and we had to pool our tips together for the end of the trek as a group. The group went against this advice and tipped everyone equally, which genuinely upset our guide (he wasn’t angry just sad that we though he did not deserve more), and we all ended up tipping him extra! I knew it was a bad idea and tried to voice this but I didn’t want to start a disagreement so ending up going along with it (I wish I hadn’t :see_no_evil_monkey: ).

To this day I’m always unsure of the best practice. I’ve learned to follow the guide’s lead when they explain how tipping works, but sometimes it’s not clear, and it’s not just the main guide, sometimes there are drivers, porters, local guides, hotel staff, and I’m never quite sure who to include or how much is appropriate for each.

I know different cultures and customs vary, but does anyone have any advice of how to navigate tipping, do you do it each day or at the end? And how do you decide how much to tip when you don’t know the norms in that country?
