Tips for most scenic train journeys in Europe?

Hi trainheads! I’m looking for suggestions on some scenic train routes in Europe – no specific location in mind.

Which ones are your favorite?

Some of my favorites:

  • The Oslo to Bergen train, which is hands down the most scenic route I’ve ever done.
  • London to Edinburgh has some lovely bits, especially through the Lake District (if you go via the west coast) and around Newcastle (if you go via the east coast).
  • The Ötscherbär adventure train in Austria, from St Pölten (just west of Vienna) to Mariazell. It’s a slow train going through fields, hills, and mountains, with stunning views of lakes, forests and mountain tops.

On my list currently: the Edinburgh flyer, an old steam train from York to Edinburgh. Bit pricey, but I’ve watched a documentary episode on it, and it’s now top of my list!

A nice shorter one that you can do in a day trip from Vienna is the Mariazellerbahn - there is some beautiful hiking in the region too!

Most scenic train journey you’ve ever taken?

I love train travel threads.

It’s probably about time I updated my own Rail Travel article on Travel Notes.

It’s looking dated and some of the links probably don’t work any more, so thanks for inspiring me.
