Santorini sunset: Is Oia actually worth the crush of people or are there better spots?

I know Oia is the ‘famous’ instagram spot for the Sunset on Santorini. I’m not sure what makes it so special there compared to other parts of the islands. It looks so overrun with people there from what I’ve seen, so I wonder - why is it so special and is it worth the crush of people? Or are there any other recommendations for less busy sunset spots on the island?

I went to Santorini and never made it to Oia for sunset (I did try one day but the bus never showed up so I didn’t make it on time!). But even during the day - and at the end of October which is when the tourist season is almost over (some hotels had even shut down by this point) Oia was extremely busy during the day because of a cruise ship that had docked with queues of people trying to get the famous photo of the Oia windmills, so I can only imagine how busy it would be at sunset!)

Anyway, after missing this bus I hired a car for the remaining couple of days and drove to the Akrotiri lighthouse which is at the opposite tip of the island from Oia and saw the sunset over the sea from there. It was a little busy but not too crazy. It was a beautiful sunset over the sea, but I guess the difference is you don’t see all the white dome buildings change colour as the sun sets, which is why (from what I read) Oia is the top spot.

I would take less crowds any day, so this was good for me!
