My husband and I are looking to travel to Thailand and Vietnam during Christmas and New Year’s time. It will be our first time being away from our family, so we want to know if people in Asia celebrate Christmas and also the New Year. We don’t want to be stuck in a hotel with no activity to do while we’re there. And will the malls, restaurants, bars and transportation be operated during this time?

Asian countries do not celebrate Christmas in the same way as some Christian Western countries do. They have their own religious and New Year Celebrations which are different dates to Western. The shops and markets and restaurants are never closed. You may see some Christmas decorating in tourist hotels but it is not major. In Singapore and Hong Kong being past British outposts there is more, but again nothing closes.
