I’m leaning more towards the Portuguese Route for my first Camino, but now I’m stuck between the Central and Coastal routes. The Coastal route really appeals to me for the ocean views and seaside towns, but the Central route seems like it might have more of that classic Camino feel with smaller villages and more pilgrims along the way.
For anyone who’s done either one, which would you recommend for a first Camino? And what time of year did you go — or wish you’d gone? Would also appreciate just any stories of your personal experience as well
It really depends on what you want. I did the French Way first. However, I’m doing the Portuguese in October starting in Porto going along the Coast.
The French Way has the most infrastructure, but from what I can see, the Portuguese has grown exponentially from Porto. I’ve been on parts of the Primitive and has quite a bit. I would decide how much you want to do (the whole thing or part of it). Some people just do a week at a time. Is the Compostela important? There’s tons of content on social media.
Also, I’m doing the Coastal and going inland at Caminha towards Valenca to cross into Spain at Tui. I recommend taking as little as possible, making sure your shoes are well broken in, and rain gear. You don’t have to suffer with carrying everything. Luggage courier services are fine. You can ship a bag ahead in Porto.
