Putting together a first trip through Vienna, Prague and Budapest, about ten days, and trying to work out the order and how long in each. Is it better to start in Vienna and work east, and do two nights per city do them justice or is that too rushed? For anyone who’s done the three, how did you split it? Thanks in advance.

It all depends on your flights or how you plan to get to and from the cities.

I’d do Prague, Vienna, Budapest as it’s linear; adding Bratislava to Vienna.

My general rule is 3 days in each destination minimum. That gives you a chance to really explore the area, take in the culture, and enjoy some time without feeling rushed. I did Prague for 5 days, and then Budapest for 5. Went back for Vienna and Salzburg another time.

I’d definitely do Prague → Vienna → Budapest like @TravelNotes suggested. It makes such a nice route because you’re basically travelling in one direction instead of backtracking. I also wouldn’t bother flying between any of them. Train would 100% be my choice. You’re also travelling city centre to city centre, so once you factor in getting to the airport, security and waiting around, I feel like flying would just create more hassle!

As others have said, Vienna should be the middle stop on your trip, so either Prague - Vienna - Budapest or Budapest - Vienna - Prague. The trains between each city are really regular, affordable and reliable so there’s really no reason to fly!
2 nights in each is probably enough to get a good feel for each place. It might be a little rushed if you’re trying to fit lots in.
I think all three cities are quite similar, but at the same time all have extremely different vibes, so hopefully you’ll get a good idea of which city is more your style and you can spend more time there next time earound 😉
Have a great trip!
