First time Bangkok next month and I keep going back and forth on tuk tuks. The YouTube vlogs make them look like essential BKK culture. The Reddit threads make them sound like “get in and you will be taken to 4 gem shops.”
Are they actually faster than just grabbing a Grab in traffic? And how do you avoid the scam route where they “have to” stop at a suit tailor? Is there a safe way to use one (agree on price up front, refuse detours) or just don’t bother and take the BTS everywhere?

Tuk‑tuks can be faster for short hops and weaving through heavy traffic.
The scams are real but easy to avoid, if you don’t go on the ‘20 baht city tour’.
I never had a problem with them, but then I like to think I’m very ‘street smart’.
Tuk‑tuks have no meter, so agree on a fixed fare upfront.
Personally, I would never ‘charter’ a Tuk-Tuk for an hour or two, or pick one up outside a tourist site. Walk a little, and flag one (but not in the Old City).
You choose them, not the other way around. If someone approaches you with a deal, it’s probably better to ignore it.
Once you get the hang of haggling the Tuk-tuks, it’s fun, but I prefer walking anyway.
For many, BTS (around Sukhumvit) and MRT is often the best option.
