Hi trainheads! I’m looking for suggestions on some scenic train routes in Europe – no specific location in mind. 🙂

Which ones are your favorite?

Some of my favorites:

- The **Oslo to Bergen train** , which is hands down the most scenic route I’ve ever done.
- **London to Edinburgh** has some lovely bits, especially through the **Lake** **District** (if you go via the west coast) and around **Newcastle** (if you go via the east coast).
- The **Ötscherbär adventure train in Austria** , from St Pölten (just west of Vienna) to Mariazell. It’s a slow train going through fields, hills, and mountains, with stunning views of lakes, forests and mountain tops.

On my list currently: **the Edinburgh flyer,** an old steam train from York to Edinburgh. Bit pricey, but I’ve watched a documentary episode on it, and it’s now top of my list!

A nice shorter one that you can do in a day trip from Vienna is the Mariazellerbahn - there is some beautiful hiking in the region too!

Europe Tours by Train

Most scenic train journey you’ve ever taken?

> Train journeys feel like travel within travel — not just a way to get from one place to another, but an experience on their own. One of my all-time favorite routes is the Bernina Express in Switzerland. The changing landscapes, glaciers, lakes and mountain villages make it feel like moving through a living postcard. I’m curious to hear from others — which train journey left the strongest impression on you, and why?

I love train travel threads.

It’s probably about time I updated my own Rail Travel article on Travel Notes.

It’s looking dated and some of the links probably don’t work any more, so thanks for inspiring me.

The Bernina Express in Switzerland is definitely one of my favorites. The views are incredible the whole way, with mountains, lakes, little villages and snowy peaks. It was one of the most beautiful train journeys I have ever done in Europe.
