Okay here’s my dilemma. 3 days in Split in early July. I want to see the old town properly (Diocletian’s palace etc), do either Krka OR Plitvice, and squeeze in a boat day to Hvar or Brac. Is this insane? A friend did it and said she felt like she didn’t actually experience Split itself, just used it as a hub. Should I just pick 2 of the 3 and enjoy? Krka is closer than Plitvice right, or am I making that up?
Krka is indeed closer to Split than Plitvice.
Is it possible to extend your stay in Croatia to five days?
Otherwise, what are your priorities - nature vs islands vs history?
Plitvice Lakes is absolutely stunning, but it takes time. Best if you can stay there the night and get an early start in the morning, before the tour buses arrive.
Personally, I preferred Hvar to Brac.
I believe I posted about the choices before.
Some other questions.
How are you getting to Split and departing?
What are your arrival and departure times?
Are you renting a car, or doing tours?
Once we know all the other criteria, it’s easier to make suggestions.
Personally, having done all of these (with more time on my hands back then) here’s how I would do it, if I only had three days and the arrival and departure schedules fit.
Explore Split in the morning and aim to overnight at Plitvice.
Explore the park early in the morning then on to Krka (take the boat from Skradin into the park) and back to Split.
Renting a car makes it smooth as tours won’t allow this combination. It’s a long day, but not a punishing one. You’ll walk a lot at Plitvice, less at Krka.
And on the third day, head out to Hvar.
