Lake Bled: worth the hype or just an Instagram spot?

I’ve seen approximately 47 billion photos of Lake Bled with that little island church and I’m suspicious. Is it actually that beautiful in person or is it one of those places where everyone takes the same photo from the same angle and the rest of the lake is just… a lake?

We’re thinking of adding a day in Bled to our Croatia trip (driving from Ljubljana). Is one day enough? Can you swim in the lake? And is the town itself worth staying overnight or should we just do a few hours and drive on?

I’ve been to Bled a few times, staying overnight twice, while driving through.

The lake is small, walkable, and consistently scenic.

The internet has trained everyone to take the exact same photo from the exact same viewpoint, but just ignore what others are up to and enjoy your own experience.

The Julian Alps in the background add drama you don’t see in the tight Instagram crop.

Yes, you can swim in the lake and whether or not you stay overnight should really depend on your own itinerary; especially as you’re already staying in Ljubljana (only 40 minutes away).

You wouldn’t stay for the town, but for the lakeside experience.
