Hi all, I’m looking at a self-drive tour in Ireland, coming from the states. I like the idea of driving myself (and my wife), so we can make stops in the lesser known parts of the country along the way. I am nervous though about driving on the left, I have done it once before many years ago in Northern Spain which went fine, but I undertand Ireland has some narrow country roads, I think i would feel more comfortable with freeways. What is it like driving on the left in Irelenad and how difficult is it?
I lived in Ireland and spent 12 months working in a rural village where part of my job was driving customers back to various farms and houses around the countryside. While the ‘back-roads’ can be narrow with stone fences it was never an issue - people there are used to driving on them and there’s always places to pull over to make space if needed. For your self-drive tour though, most of your driving will probably be on more main roads… getting between towns, while the roads are still smaller than ‘normal’, they usually have some separation and the traffic is fine. You’ll do great.
