How much climbing and uneven ground is there on a Greece tour - the Acropolis, Meteora and the ruins?

We’re drawn to the ancient sites but a little wary of the steep steps at the Acropolis, the polished marble underfoot, and those clifftop monasteries at Meteora. We’d hate to be the ones holding everyone up. Realistically, how much clambering does it take to see the highlights?

I didn’t find there was too too much at the Acropolis. Just wear good sneakers and walk carefully.

The Acropolis is a must-see, as is the beautiful, new Acropolis Museum.

I have been to both places and here is what I can tell you:

  • The walk up to Acropolis is a fairly gentle slope to start with for most of the way with a few stairs here and there, and gets a little steeper once you near the top. There are a few places you can stop to sit for a rest and views along the way. Once you reach the top, you hit the big marble steps you are referring to. A lot of people were sitting on these to take in the view or take pictures. I went on a dry day and had no issues with them being slippery, I was wearing trainers. In the rain, this might be a different story, so I think making sure you have some shoes with a good grip would help. A lot of people stop along the way for a rest and photos so I dont think you would be out of place doing the same!

  • For the Monasteries - there is a beautiful Monastery you can drive up to which does not have stairs - St Stephens (the most beautiful interior in my view), very accessible. The Grand Monastery, does have steps that zigzag up the side, and I believe all the others have too, but these can be done slowly, or you can skip it altogether and stick to St Stephens (just a small bridge to walk over). Usually tours will go to a couple of different ones - and honestly the view looking at it from the outside is very impressive on its own.

Of course this depends on your own mobility, but I would not let it put you off at all, they are both stunning locations and if you are with a tour they will take your needs into consideration too. Choose your footwear well! My travel companion wore flip-flops, and she was sliding a lot. I wore sneakers and had a much easier time.
