Just booked an Egypt tour and realized I never asked about group size. The website says “small group” but doesn’t give an exact number. I’ve seen some tours advertised as 8 to 12 people and others that go up to 40+.

What’s typical for a multi-day guided tour? And does the group size actually matter for the experience? I feel like 40 people on a bus would be really different from 15. We’re in our early 60s and don’t want to feel like we’re on a school field trip.

This really depends on the company that is running the trip. Some are really great at large groups, and make for a super fun chance to make friends and connect. Some that offer a more intimate experience let you see things more off the beaten path that a larger group could simply not manage.

Maybe a little middle ground would be nice, such as a group with a maximum of say 28?

With a smaller group, I imagine everything is just easier especially with getting on and off the bus, checking into hotels, asking the guide questions, keeping everyone together at attractions, etc. With 40+ people, even a quick stop can turn into waiting around for everyone.

That being said, if the tour specifically says **“small group,”** I definitely wouldn’t assume that means a full 40-person coach. For Egypt especially, where you’re visiting a lot of historical sites and actually want to hear what the guide is saying, I’d personally prefer the smaller group.

Have you already asked the operator what they consider a “small group”? I’m curious what number they come back with because I feel like every company defines it differently!
