We have 5 nights in Munich and one of the things my wife is most excited about is the Black Forest. Problem is when I mapped it, it’s like 3 to 3.5 hours each way by car. That’s 7 hours of driving for a day trip which sounds miserable.
Is it worth doing an overnight stay in a town like Freiburg or Triberg instead? Or honestly, is the Black Forest overhyped and we’d be better off spending that day doing something closer to Munich like Neuschwanstein or Salzburg?
As your wife is excited about the Black Forest, probably wise to give her the overnight and shave a night off Munich.
The region offers over 24,000 kilometres of marked hiking trails; so if you really want to discover the Black Forest, you may need a couple of days in the area, possibly even three.
At a bare minimum, do one night in Freiburg, Triberg, or Titisee.
But whether it’s really worth it, depends on your wife’s expectations.
Since you’re coming from Munich and want to make the long drive worthwhile, Freiburg or Titisee give you the best overnight experience. They feel like a real trip, not just a quick stop.
If your wife wants waterfalls and cuckoo clocks specifically, then Triberg is the winner.
If you really want to pamper her with Spa Luxury, head to Baden-Baden.
