We’re a couple planning a first week in France and know Paris takes a few days, but we’re unsure what to add - the chateaux of the Loire, a couple of days in Provence, or the Riviera. For those who’ve done a week, what pairs best with Paris without too much time on trains?

The Loire Valley is a great choice with Paris for a week. It’s not too far from Paris, and you get a completely different feel with the châteaux, small towns and countryside.

After several days in Paris we did the easy train from Paris to Loire Valley then rented a car. We stayed a night each in Blois, Chinon and Amboise. So much to see and lovely dining/wine!

Hey Nicola! Hope I haven’t jumped on too late. A week in France is perfect pending what you want to do. If you love museums, you could easily extend Paris to 4 days and Bordeaux is only a very short train ride and another beautiful spot to visit. You could also train to Avignon and explore the Provenance region or head to Nice and explore the Riviera. All really accessible depending on the vibe you’re after.

In Paris I highly recommend going to the Orangerie Museum (all things Claude Monet; including his lillies), The Louvre of course and Napoleon’s tomb if you’re interested in that history. The Cheese and Butter museum (Musée Vivant du fromage) is a cute niche spot to visit too and don’t forget to stop by Fragonard’s to grab a real French perfume! Bateaux Mouches Seine cruise and a sunset visit to Sacre Cour are also must do’s! Enjoy France!

Nicola, if you like Champagne, I will highly recommend a day trip or two to Reims. We just left Reims (we stayed 5 days), and we had such a great time. Reims is a very short train ride from Paris, much shorter than the trip to Bordeaux, and you can visit big Champagne houses like Veuve Clicquot or smaller ones where you often meet the owners in the vineyards.
